What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of mind. When a person experiences hypnosis they are deeply relaxed yet still aware of everything that happens. Hypnosis is more than relaxation, for while a person is in hypnosis their subconscious mind is receptive to positive suggestions.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a therapy that uses hypnosis to communicate directly with a person’s subconscious mind. The subconscious mind can be thought of as your own computer. Everything you have learnt or experienced is stored in the subconscious mind, from when you learnt to walk to how you learnt to interact with people is stored in the subconscious. How we think and about ourselves, others and the world around us are stored in your subconscious computer as are our emotions and emotional responses. By using hypnosis as part of therapy, the Hypnotherapist is able to reprogramme the subconscious mind. For example, a person with a fear of flying may know that this fear is unreasonable, but is unable to overcome this fear. This happens because fear is an emotion and their fear of flying has become a programmed response which is controlled by the subconscious. By using hypnosis, the Hypnotherapist is able to replace the fear of flying with a more reasonable response. In fact, the individual learns not only to relax while flying, but can easily come to enjoy the experience.
Does the Hypnotherapist take control of my mind?
No. At all times you are in control. The Hypnotherapist merely guides you into hypnosis and gives you suggestions. It is your mind and you are ALWAYS in control.
Can I be told in hypnosis to do something that I don’t want to do?
You could be told to do something, but if you didn't agree with it or objected to it you would ignore the suggestion. You cannot be made to do anything that is against your beliefs or own moral standards.
What if I don’t like the suggestions that are given to me?
Any suggestion that you don’t like or disagree with will be ignored by your subconscious mind. The Hypnotherapist will always talk to you before you go into hypnosis and before giving therapy will discuss with you the types of suggestions they intend to use.
